Scholarships were recently awarded to 30 area students in health-related fields during Sarah Bush Lincoln Volunteer Guild’s annual scholarship awards reception.

The Guild awarded $27,000 in scholarships to 28 students for the 2012-2013 academic year. In addition, Eric Foster was awarded the Vasudeo Shripad Joag Scholarship established by SBL Family Medical Center Internal Medicine physician Kiran Joag, MD, and his wife, Nandini. Foster is the first recipient of this scholarship, established in memory of Dr. Joag’s father. It will be awarded annually to a student from Coles County pursuing a degree in a medically related field. Joshua Wiseman of Champaign was awarded the Dr. C.D. Swickard Scholarship, which is also awarded annually to an area student. Both Foster and Wiseman are pursuing medical degrees from the University of Illinois.

Since 1979, the Guild has raised more than a half a million dollars to provide scholarships to students in SBL’s service area, who are pursuing their education in medically related fields. Funding for the scholarship program is provided through proceeds from The Gift Shop, Sarah’s Kiosk, and La Grande Soirée. Students receiving these scholarships are studying nursing, physical therapy, medicine, respiratory therapy, psychology, pharmacy, radiology, speech pathology and clinical lab science.
