Free Colon Cancer Screening Kits Available

March 9, 2016 9:49 a.m.

Colon cancer is treatable in its earliest stages, and periodic screenings are needed for early detection.

A limited number of free Hemosure colon cancer screening kits are available on a first-come first-served basis from:

2 to 4 pm, Friday, March 11, at the Jasper County Health Department at 106 East Edwards, Newton

11 to 1 pm, Thursday, March 17, at the Shelbyville Senior Center

11 am to 1 pm, Thursday, March 24, at the Casey Senior Center

This easy-to-do screen is non-invasive and has a 97 percent accuracy rate!

The kit allows participants to easily collect a stool sample in a plastic container. It is then returned discreetly in a brown bag to any Sarah Bush Lincoln clinic or the hospital outpatient lab. Tests should be returned to Sarah Bush Lincoln by March 31.

Participants will receive a letter in the mail from the Sarah Bush Lincoln Gastroenterology Clinic if the test results are negative. All participants with a positive test result will receive a phone call from the SBL Gastroenterology Clinic, and a certified letter alerting the participant to the results and the actions that should taken for further investigation.

People who fit the following criteria should consider participating.

•  People between 50 and 75 years old

•  People with a strong family history of colon cancer

•  People who have never had a colonoscopy

•  People with the following symptoms:
