Clinical Significance
Uric acid measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.
Evaluate uric acid metabolism in gout and renal calculus formation; identification of overexcretors important re: risks of stone formation; identify genetic defects; influence of overexcretion on therapy of gout (allopurinol lowers urinary as well as serum urate); evaluate nephrolithiasis.
