Evaluate uric acid metabolism in gout and renal calculus formation; identify overexcretors to determine risks of stone formation; identify genetic defects; influence of overexcretion on therapy of gout (allopurinol lowers urinary as well as serum urate); evaluate nephrolithiasis.
Increased levels of uric acid in urine are used to identify patients at risk for stone formation, genetic defects, and nephrolithiasis.
