Methodology

Quantitative High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)

Clinical Significance

To monitor treatment of thyroid cancer and to detect recurrence; less commonly, to help determine the cause of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism

Tandem Mass Spectrometry is recommended for quantifying thyroglobulin in individuals with antithyroglobulin antibodies and for surveillance of residual/recurrent thyroid cancer in individuals who have developed antibodies to thyroglobulin. Order immunoassay for thyroglobulin and antithyroglobulin antibodies (SBMF# 30022) in cases where antithyroglobulin antibody status is negative or unknown.
