Clinical Significance
The Pap Test is used preventively to screen for gynecologic cancer or other conditions that precede cancer, such as dysplasia. It aids in establishing the diagnosis of primary or metastatic neoplasms; intraepithelial lesions (dysplasia); human papillomavirus (HPV); and inflammatory agents (herpes virus, fungi, Trichomonas vaginalis, Actinomyces, Candida, bacteria).
