Clinical Significance

Detection and quantitative determination of rheutamoid factors in human serum or plasma.

The presence or absence of rheumatoid factors has high diagnostic power in confirming or ruling out preliminary diagnoses developed from patient history and clinical findings. Generally seropositive rheumatic arthritis has a poor prognosis than the seronegative form. Results from rheumatoid factor determinations should, however, always be evaluated in conjunction with clinical and other laboratory findings because low RF levels do not necessarily demonstrate the absence of rheumatoid arthritis and high RF concentration are not limited to only rheumatic diseases. Additional investigations regarding existence of disease may be required.
