Sputum specimen: - Patient should cough deeply and expectorate into sterile container - Patient’s mouth, lips, tongue, or fingers should not touch the inside of the container - If needed, deep coughing can be induced by inhalation of nebulized warm aerosol containing saline - Specimen should consist of thick mucoid material, not saliva. Submit, bronchial aspirate, tracheal aspirate, or transtracheal aspirate specimens collected in sterile containers or collection traps.
