Clinical Significance
Albumin is synthesized by the liver and is therefore a measure of hepatic function. The albumin level decreases in the presence of inflammation or infection. When disease affects the liver cell, the hepatocyte loses its ability to synthesize albumin and the serum albumin level is decreased. In dehydrated patients, the albumin fraction of the total protein may be elevated.
