Clinical Significance

Evaluate bacterial or viral encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, mycobacterial or fungal infection, primary or secondary malignancy, leukemia/malignant lymphoma of CNS, trauma, vascular occlusive disease, heredofamilial and/or degenerative processes. Polymorphonuclear cells predominate in acute suppurative meningitis sue to meningococcus, pneumoncoccus, streptococcus, etc., and in brain abscess. Small lymphocytes predominate in tuberculous meningitis, syphilis, polio, multiple sclerosis, and encephalitis.
