Clinical Significance

Centromere antibodies demonstrate a specific ANA pattern, which is present in 80-90% of individuals with CREST variant scleroderma. The pattern is also seen in 30% of Raynaud patients, 12% of patients with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, Diffuse Scleroderma, Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, and in a smaller percent of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and RA. A result of "None detected" indicates that the reactivity of the sample is less than 1:40, or that the ANA pattern is not centromere.
