Clinical Significance
Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) is a synthetic variant of the amphetamines drug class that acts as a hallucinogenic stimulant. MDMA has a high abuse potential and no accepted medical use in the United States. The effects of MDMA include visual hallucinations, "feeling of well being,” euphoria, confusion, agitation, and other neurobehavioral disturbances. The metabolite of MDMA, Methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) is longer acting and has been shown to cause damage to some nerve cells in the brain. Both MDMA and MDA are detected via this procedure. Positive result indicates exposure to drug and does not necessarily indicate impairment.
