Clinical Significance
Anti-Sm is generally diagnostic for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Anti-RNP is mainly seen in mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD).
While anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) tests are employed for initial screening, follow-up tests for ANA-positive samples are needed to identify specific antibodies to nuclear antigens such as DNA, histones, and saline-extractable nuclear antigens. Current trends in immunopathology indicate that a detailed analysis of antibody specificities is useful in establishing the correct diagnosis and prognosis.
