Clinical Significance
Evaluate anemia, blood loss, hemolytic anemia, polycythemia and other conditions.
Hemoglobin is used to investigate suspected anemia or erythrocytosis. Anemia is defined as a hemoglobin value below normal for age and gender. Further investigation of the cause of anemia is guided by clinical features, blood film and red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC). The hemoglobin is elevated in erythrocytosis. • Hematocrit is used in the assessment of anemia and erythrocytosis or to monitor hemodilution or hemoconcentration. The hematocrit is reduced in anemia; increased in erythrocytosis. In patients with erythrocytosis, the hematocrit correlates with blood viscosity.
