Clinical Significance

Detect presence of IgM-specific HAV antibody to diagnose either a current or recent HAV infection (IgM specific); this test is indicated when acute hepatitis A infection is suspected.

The serologic diagnosis of acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection depends upon the demonstration of IgM-specific anti-HAV. This antibody usually appears about 4 weeks after infection and may persist for up to 4 months after the onset of clinical symptoms.
