Clinical Significance
Predict the risk of coronary arterial atherosclerosis—high LDL is a risk factor for atherosclerotic heart disease (ASHD).
The cholesterol of atherosclerotic plaques is derived from low density lipoproteins (LDL). Increases in LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease. Due to the protective properties of high density lipoproteins (HDL), the LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio provides a better indication of risk than either single result.
