Clinical Significance
Diagnosis and follow-up of patients with pheochromocytoma and related neurogenic tumors.
Quantitation of urine normetanephrine and metanephrine, collectively referred to as “metanephrines” is commonly requested in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with pheochromocytoma and related neurogenic tumors. It has been found that 0.1-0.5% of hypertensive patients may have this type of tumor. Since pheochromocytoma is surgically curable, it is desirable to screen all hypertensive patients and identify any suspected cases for further studies.
