Clinical Significance

Aid in the diagnosis of kidney and intestinal disease. Test for early increase of proteinuria in diabetes and in pre-eclampsia, before proteinuria becomes evident by conventional urinalysis.

The microalbumin test provides a direct measurement of micro quantities of albumin present in urine, utilizing a urine based calibrator and control. Prospective studies indicate that increased urinary albumin excretion precedes and is highly predictive of diabetic nephropathy, end stage renal disease, and proliferative retinopathy in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
