Clinical Significance

Aid in the diagnosis of kidney and intestinal disease • Test for early increase of proteinuria in diabetes and in pre-eclampsia, before proteinuria becomes evident by conventional urinalysis.

The microalbumin test provides a direct measurement of micro quantities of albumin present in urine, utilizing a urine based calibrator and control. Protein excretion rate is ordinarily determined from a 24-Hour Urine collection because random specimens vary considerably in protein concentration. The ranges are based on total volume and time. Prospective studies indicate that increased urinary albumin excretion precedes and is highly predictive of diabetic nephropathy, end stage renal disease, and proliferative retinopathy in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
