Clinical Significance

Useful aid in the diagnosis of various gastrointestinal conditions.

Gastrointestinal bleeding may be associated with a number of diseases of the alimentary tract, including peptic ulceration, hiatus hernia, and malignant tumors of the colon. Heavy bleeding generally results in stools showing a dark red to black color and a tarry consistency, but smaller blood loss may not significantly alter the appearance of the stool. Accordingly, chemical tests for occult blood in feces provide the physician with a useful aid in the diagnosis of various gastrointestinal conditions.
