Clinical Significance

Used in the diagnosis and treatment of phenobarbital overdose and in monitoring levels of the drug to ensure proper therapy.

Phenobarbital is used primarily for the long-term treatment of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures and cortical focal seizures. For children under five years of age, phenobarbital is the antiepileptic of choice. Older children and adults are treated first with phenytoin; phenobarbital is added if needed.
