Clinical Significance

Detect cases of pinworm infestation (enterobiasis), Enterobius vermicularis parasitic infestation.

Infection with Enterobius vermicularis, the human pinworm parasite, is a common clinical problem. The organism is primarily a parasite of young children; however, adults can also be infected. Adult worms typically live in the cecum, colon, appendix, and rectum. Usually adult females migrate out of the anal orifice at night and lay their eggs in the perianal area. Samples can be collected from this area to be examined for the presence of pinworm ova.
