Single, high-positive antibody titers may indicate past or current infection. An increase in titers between acute and convalescent sera of at least fourfold is considered strong evidence of current or recent infection.

Clinical Significance

Titers equal to or greater than 1:8 suggest either gonococcal infection or asymptomatic colonization. Antibodies recognizing Neisseria gonorrhoeae are apparently unprotective, since reinfection frequently occurs.
