Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human herpesvirus included in the Gammaherpesvirinae subfamily. Infecting approximately 90% of the world’s population, this silent infection often goes undetected. Although most of primary EBV infections are asymptomatic, it causes acute symptomatology in neonates and immunocompromised adults. The virus is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and chronic infection of EBV is associated with the development of several lymphomas.
