Sarah Bush Lincoln Welcomes Obstetrician/Gynecologist

August 23, 2012 4:10 p.m.

Sarah Bush Lincoln is pleased to welcome Obstetrician/Gynecologist Mel Fleming, MD, to its medical staff.

Dr. Fleming comes to the community after being in private practice in Winchester and Manchester, Tennessee since 2010. Prior to that, he took care of women’s health concerns and delivered babies at hospitals in Peoria. In addition, Dr. Fleming served five years as a clinical instructor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria. In 2009, he was named Consultant of the Year by family practice residents at the teaching hospital.

Born and raised in Havana, he was inspired to pursue medicine in high school to help people like his brother, who suffered from multiple medical problems throughout his childhood. Receiving a biology degree summa cum laude from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1997, Dr. Fleming immediately entered medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria. He completed four years of residency through the same program at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. Dr. Fleming was named chief resident of obstetrics and gynecology during his final year of residency.

Dr. Fleming enjoys interacting with families as they bring a new life into the world. “The single biggest thrill is delivering a child to first-time parents, though I enjoy the entire spectrum of obstetrics and gynecology and caring for women of all ages,” he said. Excited to be back in Central Illinois, Dr. Fleming joins Obstetrician/Gynecologists Michael Benson, DO, Rick Miller, DO, Scott Myer, MD, and Nurse Practitioners Nicole Wochner, APN, and Leslie Taggart, APN, at SBL Women’s Healthcare. His clinical interests include high risk pregnancy and general gynecology. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Fleming urges his patients to take an active role in deciding what type of care is best for them. He believes in giving his patients as much information as possible so they can make informed decisions.

Dr. Fleming makes his home in Charleston with his wife, Erin, and their daughter, Taylor, 10, and son, Michael ‘Mikey,’ 7.

To make an appointment with Dr. Fleming, call 258- or 348-4030. He practices in the SBL Medical Office Pavilion, Suite 201.
