September 2019 SBL DAISY Nurse Award Recipient

September 18, 2019 10:59 a.m.

Cheyenne Cameron, RN, was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Sarah Bush Lincoln on September 17.

Cameron was nominated for making a big impression on a patient who was nervous about having a stress test. In a nomination letter, the patient wrote:

“My doctor ordered a stress test. Since I have never had one before, I was very apprehensive about chemicals being used to speed up my heart rate. From the minute I entered the Heart Center, everyone was very supportive. I met my nurse, Cheyenne, and she thoroughly explained everything to me. I told her I was afraid of chemicals speeding my heart rate and she explained that if I could get my heart rate up on my own we wouldn’t need it. With her encouragement and coaching, I made it on the treadmill without the chemicals! Cheyenne was so supportive and knowledgeable. She answered all of my questions and was by my side with encouragement throughout every step.

This is why I would like to nominate her for the DAISY Award. She turned something I was afraid of into a positive experience. I would definitely recommend the Heart Center to anyone. Thank you, Cheyenne – You are my super-hero!”

Sarah Bush Lincoln has joined more than 2,700 healthcare facilities by becoming a DAISY Award hospital partner. During the award presentation, Cameron received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”

The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.

Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and other employees may nominate a deserving nurse for The Daisy Award and a nurse will be selected by SBL’s DAISY committee every month to received this special honor. Nomination forms are located at www.sarahbush.org and at all SBL clinics and on patient floors. The forms can be submitted to any Sarah Bush Lincoln staff member, or sent via email to [email protected] or mail to Sarah Bush Lincoln, DAISY Nursing Award, 1000 Health Center Drive, Mattoon, IL 61938.
