The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation hosted its annual nursing scholarship reception, in which it awarded scholarships, all funded through philanthropy, to SBL employees who are furthering their education.
This year, 11 employees received scholarships, totaling $11,000 thanks to the generosity of area donors.
Three SBL employees received the Mildred Sidell Perry Award which was established by her son Keith, in recognition of his mother’s nursing career spanning six decades. Recipients were: Registered nurses Miranda Webster, Advanced Wound Center; Emma Moran, Urology Clinic; and Kelsey Helmink, Cardiology.
Tonya Roley, purchasing coordinator in the SBL Pharmacy, received the Dr. and Mrs. Kiran Joag Award. Dr. & Mrs. Joag established an endowment in honor of Dr. Joag’s long-time nurse Wendy Henson. Dr. Joag retired from Sarah Bush Lincoln in 2019 after 38 years of service.
The Dr. and Mrs. Stan Huffman Scholarship was awarded to two employees: Chloe Frederick, office assistant; and Nikki Heddins, clinic nurse. Dr. Huffman was a long-time physician at Sarah Bush Lincoln and Mrs. Huffman is a member of WomenConnected.
Registered Nurse Emily Skelton, ICU, received the Li-Shiang Chang Award, established by family members who were pleased with Chang’s care in SBL’s ICU. Registered Nurse Kamdyn Dunn, Labor and Delivery, received the Dr. John Jemsek Award, established by colleagues of Dr. Jemsek after his death and 50 years of service as a rural provider.
Other scholarship recipients included Registered Nurse Dakota Clayton, infectious disease, who was awarded the Valerie and Brian Boroughs Award which they established after Valerie retired after a long nursing career at Sarah Bush Lincoln.
Registered Nurse Cheyenne Wells, cardiology, received the Dr. Richard and Lylia Andrews Award, established in their honor, by their daughter Pamella Waddell.
Nurse Practitioner Taylor Johnson, gastroenterology, received the Dr. James Van Popering Award, a long-time gastroenterologist at Sarah Bush Lincoln.
“Donors who establish scholarships like these make a such a substantial difference not only to our employees who are furthering their careers, but also to future patients for whom they’ll provide care,” said Amy Card, SBL Health Foundation Director. “Healthcare is ever-changing and continued education and advancement of staff helps Sarah Bush Lincoln continue to provide the high-quality, compassionate care we’re known for.
